■ Applied next-generation material carbon fiber first in Korea
■ Stronger than steel but lighter and more flexible, released in telecommunication and signal cable
■ To be used in applications requiring mobility in smart factories/buildings, EVs/railroads/ships
LS Cable & System (President & CEO Roe-hyun Myung) announced on September 21 that it has commercialized a communication cable using carbon fiber.
The company adopted carbon fiber, a next-generation material that the government is fostering strategically, as the shielding material for protecting the cable. Conventionally, copper or aluminum are used as the shielding materials.
If carbon fiber is used, the cable will be at least 10~20% lighter but will also be at least 30% more flexible and durable. If carbon fiber is applied to automotive wires and cables, weight savings of 20kg to 25kg can be realized per vehicle.
Carbon fiber is only 1/4th the weight of steel but is 10 times stronger and 7 times more elastic. It is increasingly replacing steel in areas where lightweight and durability are important, such as aircraft, automobiles, and wind power generators.
LS C&S has finished preparation for mass-production of LAN cables that will be used for equipment operation and system management in smart factories and buildings and is now trying to apply the new technology to all industrial cables.
In particular, the company believes that it will be widely used in applications requiring mobility, such as electric vehicles, railroads, aircraft and ships, and moving equipment, such as industrial robots and elevators.
“It’s hard to find a case of commercialization of cables to which carbon fiber is applied anywhere in the world,” said Roe-hyun Myung, President & CEO of LS C&S. “We are making efforts to become a ‘game changer’ through continuous R&D on new materials and environment-friendly products.”
